Encore Recycling partners with local growers to collect, wash, and recycle the more than 70 million pounds of agricultural plastic each year, which would otherwise be diverted to California landfills.
Encore’s state-of-the-art, 125,000 square foot plastic recycling facility in the Salinas Valley was built with the vision of “recycling with a purpose.” Once recycled, the agricultural plastic is repurposed in various ways. Most notably, since Encore’s end-product is fully recyclable, products made with Encore resin can create a continuous loop of sustainable plastic supply that need not ever see a landfill.
Some of the largest multi-national and recognizable names such as, Dole, Gold Farms, Ramco, Red Blossom Strawberries, as well as many independent growers, are working with Encore Recycling to ensure that their plastic is collected and recycled.
Learn more about our story below.
There is an estimated 150 million pounds of agricultural plastic used and disposed of EVERY YEAR in California.
This plastic is essential to allowing our crops to grow with less water, few pesticides, and higher yields.
Unfortunately, without a viable option for recycling, growers were forced to take this plastic to landfills by the millions every year -- creating an environmental nightmare!
In 2013, Encore Recycling opened the world's most advanced agricultural recycling system in the heart of the Salinas Valley to tackle California's growing agricultural waste problem.
Working closely with some of the biggest names in farming, Encore has since successfully diverted hundreds of millions of pounds of waste from California landfills.
Water is a precious resource, and in the midst of California's greatest water shortage in recent history, we all need to do our part to conserve water.
Agricultural water usage represents 80% of the water usage in California. Agricultural plastic like irrigation tubing and mulch film allow growers to minimize water usage by irrigating water directly to the plant roots and lock in moisture. Encore's free recycling services enables growers to utilize more water-conserving agricultural plastic, which helps to save millions of gallons each year.
At Encore, we have designed our facility with water conservation in mind. Our facility houses our own state-of-the-art water treatment system, where we treat approximately 1,000,000 gallons per day of our own process water and
re-use it to wash plastic over and over again. This process allows us conserve the equivalent water of over 28,000 swimming pools of water annually!
Encore ins't just a recycling company. We are a POLYMER ENGINEERING company.
We have a staff of dedicated PhD's and engineers that work tirelessly to develop post-consumer recycled polymer formulations tailored for specific end-use applications.
We have engineered resin for use in dozens of applications, such as new agricultural plastics, composite lumber, retail carry out bags, and even our own line of reusable bags.
